Greeting Cards

I made three cards, using my very basic sewing on cards method. I keep a plastic zip top blanket bag in my sewing room that I use to collect very small fabric scraps. I have put enough bits in there over the last year to have just about every color one could want.

Here's my very simple method:
1. Select the colors that appeal to you for the card. I like to let the scraps speak to me if possible, sometimes letting a found shape lead the way in the design.
2. Iron the scraps flat.
3. Assemble on the card front as you find pleasing.
4. Glue them down with a glue stick, just enough to hold them in place.
5. Sew the scraps down with lines, wavy or straight.
6. Pull all threads to the back of the card.

7. Cut another card in half and glue that over the threads on the inside cover of the card.

8. You are done.!

Here are all three cards, sorry that my pictures are a bit blurry. I took them with no flash.

More sewing on cards

A co-worker took a new job and a group of us bought her a gift card. I made this card for her to hold the gift. She is a diver, so I went for the greens and blues to create a sort of underwater scene. It looks like a place a fish may be hiding in. I lined the inside of the card with another piece of card stock, which allowed people to write messages on both the upper and lower insides. The little bit on the envelope is sewn together and then glued on. I also glued a row of the green rick rack on the outside envelope flap.

This is a very enjoyable process, using just little bits from your stash, pulling from it for color and pattern. I keep a plastic bag in my sewing studio and add little scraps to it as I sew, my mini scrap stash. This allows me to sort of paint with fabric. I love how the frayed ends add to the design.

Another nice part of this process is how it allows you time to think of the recipient and what they may like, the purpose of the card, and what you wish for them.

Sewing on cards

David's valentine to me and mine to him. He knows me well enough to know that I will recycle the cute little pink ribbon. The valentines were photographed out on the grill, in the snow, we bar-b-q on this day regardless of the weather.
My card to him has several hearts, all sewn on with my sewing machine and free motion stitching. I thought about putting on 30 for the years we have been married, but it seemed like that would be a bit too busy for this small canvas.

Fabric valentine post cards

I am going to try to mail two fabric valentines. Both have cardboard in the center and are 5 x 7 inches. I am not sure about affixing the stamp. I will stop at the post office tomorrow am and see what they advise. I will be very curious to see how they fare after their travel through the mail system.

This first is for my son and his wife, newlyweds, very simple and classic.
...and this one is for my younger adult son, more jazzy and spontaneous. I just love crazy quilting. The hearts are sew on, free motion. I purposely made the edges kind of scrappy, it seemed to be the right kind of finish for this one.

I don't think they are reading my blog, if so, the surprise will be spoiled. We will see.
